ABOUT US

Our Church

St Luke's Church Cross Roads is situated in the heart of our community, 89 Slipe Road, Cross Roads, Kingston, Jamaica, where we passionately embrace our vision and mission to share the transformative Gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone around us. At St Luke's Church Cross Roads, we believe in the power of connection through Church, Communion, Baptism, and Fellowship, inviting everyone to join us on a journey of faith and community as we share the gospel with the world.

Our Mission

To bring people to the knowledge of God, through the proclamation of the gospel, in study, worship and witness, thus creating a fellowship of disciples for ministry and mission.

Our Vision

As a member of the Diocese of Jamaica, St Luke’s shares the Vision statement of the Anglican Diocese. “A Diocese inspired by the Holy Spirit, through the joyful energetic discipleship of all its members, is an assertive influence for good and justice always reaching out to engage the wider society through collective and individual mission and ministry, in faith, hope and charity, welcoming inspiring and enrolling new members of the body of Christ as faithful stewards of God's resources.”

Our History

Right to Worship

The right to worship was fought for and won and a small group planted a seed of faith under a large tree on the premises where St. Luke’s Church stands today. We give thanks for the landowner who formally offered a portion of the land in 1875, to house the first church building - a wooden chapel.

Building Erected

As the work of the church and the congregation grew, a brick building, with a seating capacity of 360 was built in 1890 and dedicated on St. Luke’s Day (October 18th) to the Evangelist St. Luke. The first two rectors were Rev. H. Seymour Isaacs (1890-1898) and Rev. B.Y Shaul (1898-1902).

Building Destroyed

Partly destroyed by the earthquake of January 14, 1907, the building was eventually repaired, refurbished and extended, and by 1935, it could comfortably seat 700 worshippers. In that year, a Mission on Hope Road was handed over to St. Luke’s and the work of building the Mission into a church was entrusted to a member, Mr. J. Leslie McPherson. This resulted in the dedication of the Church of St Margaret, on January 23, 1938.

New Building

In 1958, the Diocesan authorities decided to demolish the old building and erect a new one. An ambitious building programme was launched under the leadership of the then Rector, Venerable Eric L. Maxwell and Archdeacon Emeritus (deceased), and the present building was erected. It was dedicated on March 20, 1968

Church Consecration

The Church was consecrated on March 20, 1980, during the incumbency of the Venerable Dr Alvin Stone, Rector of St. Luke’s Church since 1974. As was stated in the Consecration programme: “We will not forget that the Church is not the building; it is the people of God, called out,  prepared, commissioned and sent to be the mouth, feet and body of Christ in the world of service.” The bridge that connects the rear of the premises to Brentford Road was a gift from Mr. Horace Jones, the then owner of Checker Cabs.  In 2008, the Venerable Dr Alvin Stone was succeeded by the now incumbent leader Archdeacon Patrick Cunningham.

Our Priest Story

Archdeacon

Patrick Cunningham

Archdeacon Patrick Cunningham brings a rich blend of academic excellence and compassionate ministry to his role. A graduate of St. Stephen’s College in Canada, he holds a Master’s degree in Pastoral Psychology and Counselling from the University of the West Indies. His educational journey also includes studies at Church Teachers’ College and St. Mary High School. Before entering full-time ministry, he served as a trained teacher, combining his love for education with his deep-rooted faith.

Guided by a passion for serving in uncharted pathways, Archdeacon Cunningham completed an introductory course in Clinical Pastoral Care in the 1980s. This formative experience prepared him to lead the Diocese’s response to the HIV/AIDS crisis, supporting those living with and affected by the disease. His commitment to healing, outreach, and inclusive care has been a hallmark of his ministry, both as Rector of Christ Church, Vineyard Town, and the Balaclava Cure, and in every community he has served since.
