St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Cross Roads, continues its proud tradition of hosting thoughtful, relevant public discussions with the return of its Annual Lecture Series on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.
This year’s lecture, titled “The Church and the Political Process: Making God’s Will Done on Earth,” will be delivered by Rev. Peter Espeut, sociologist, columnist, and environmental advocate. Known for his fearless commentary and deep insight into Jamaica’s social and political fabric, Rev. Espeut promises to engage attendees in a timely reflection on the Church’s role in shaping national life.
The Intersection of Faith and Governance
In a world where political discourse often overshadows moral dialogue, this year’s theme challenges both Church and citizen to consider: How can faith influence the political process without losing its spiritual foundation?
Rev. Espeut’s presentation will explore the Church’s responsibility to bear prophetic witness — to stand for justice, truth, and compassion — even amid the complexities of modern governance.
“The Church cannot remain silent in the face of societal challenges,” said Archdeacon Patrick Cunningham, Rector of St. Luke’s Church. “Our mission compels us to engage the world thoughtfully and courageously, guided by the principles of Christ.”
A Tradition of Dialogue and Impact
Since its inception in 2004, the St. Luke’s Annual Lecture Series has been a forum for examining critical issues that affect both church and community — from education and family life to social justice and faith in changing times. Past speakers have included prominent scholars and public figures such as Dr. Celia Christie-Samuels, Professor Rosalea Hamilton, and Professor Herbert Gayle, all contributing to the church’s mission of enlightenment through dialogue.
This year’s lecture builds on that legacy, inviting participants to reflect on how spiritual principles can influence Jamaica’s civic and political evolution — fostering a society where leadership is accountable, and faith informs action.
