Transformed by the Spirit
My Brothers & Sisters
The lessons for celebrating Pentecost demonstrate the complexity and the varied perspectives the writers present about the Holy Spirit. However, we can identify some common themes. In Acts of the Apostles, Luke indicates that the Holy Spirit gives new life as the frightened disciples are “transformed for discipleship” as they proclaim the good news of salvation boldly. Consequently, the church is born as thousands respond to the proclamation of the gospel. The birth image is also presented in the reading from Romans chapter 8; “All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God “(v14). Our lives are derived and depend on God, whom we address as “Abba Father.” Paul states further that the Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Psalm 104 portrays that all of creation has its origin and is sustained by the Holy Spirit: “When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground” (Ps. 104: 30).
In the gospel, John presents the Spirit as Advocate who will be Christ’s continued life-giving presence with His Disciples throughout the ages: “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live” (Jn 14:18-19).
The Spirit is needed today, as on that first Pentecost, to transform our weakness, doubt and apathy into a life-giving witness of God’s presence in the world. The Church needs its members' powerful proclamation and lively witness to attract people to the faith. I pray that we will open our hearts and minds to the prompting of God’s Spirit in our lives this Pentecost and always.
God of wind and fire, embolden us this day to receive your power. Help us proclaim the wondrous things you have done and continue to do in our lives. Give us the strength and courage to share the Good News of your love and presence, for we ask this in Jesus’ Name. AMEN.
Have a Spirit-filled week.
Yours in Christ,
Patrick+
