From Dry Bones to New Life
View from the Pew
Ezekiel 37:1–14 and Romans 8:6 remind us that God is able to bring life where there seems to be none. In Ezekiel’s vision, the valley of dry bones represents moments in our lives when we feel empty, defeated, or without hope. The bones were dry, scattered, and lifeless - just like situations we sometimes face. Yet when God speaks, the impossible happens: bones come together, flesh forms, and breath enters them, bringing restoration and new life. This powerful image shows that no circumstance is too far gone for God to revive: whether a financial disaster, broken relationships, recovery from serious injury, nothing is too hard for God once he has purpose for the 'life' of that thing to continue.
Romans 8:6 deepens this message by teaching that focusing on the flesh leads to death—spiritual emptiness, fear, and discouragement. However, when we set our minds on the Spirit, we experience life and peace. It is a shift in perspective - choosing to trust God rather than be consumed by our struggles.
Together, these scriptures encourage us to believe that our “valley moments” can be overcome. Our lowest points are not too difficult for God. If He has a purpose for a situation, He will restore it in His perfect timing. As believers, we are called to fix our minds on the Spirit of God, allowing Him to renew our thoughts, revive our hearts, and lead us into hope, strength, and peace.
