Wisdom

My brothers and sisters in Christ, as we prepare to fellowship on this Youth Sunday, we reflect on the Old Testament reading (Proverbs 9: 1-6) where the importance of wisdom is highlighted. Here it is outlined what wisdom entails, with the most notable passage being verse 10 which states “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

What is the importance of Wisdom?

In today’s society, there is a strong emphasis on freedom and expression in all forms and fashions. Our youth are consistently exposed to promiscuity through cultural norms, social media and other easily accessible means of entertainment and it is the responsibility of parents and guardians to teach them to be wise.

The New Testament reading (Ephesians 5: 15-20) displays a clear distinction between the wise and the foolish.  Young people, particularly in their teenage or adolescent years, are at their most exposed state, where influences by peers and activities may provide the gateway for them to stray from the path toward the Lord.  For this reason, it is important to build a strong foundation from childhood so that they may be able to resist these temptations and lead a life that is pleasing to God.

This is, however, not an excuse to leave children to fend for themselves when they become adolescents and believe they are able to “handle” themselves.  Adults must exercise wisdom too! Active involvement by the church, parents and guardians is important in the spiritual development of our youth from infancy to adulthood. It is important for them to be guided through the different challenges they may face and, therefore, it is important to provide a safe space for them to communicate.  A child will NEVER listen to you if they do not feel comfortable with you.

It is the aim and priority of the church to foster its youth, to not only serve as continuity within the church, but also to carry out God’s will in preparing stewards who will operate with wisdom in the broader community.
